Wiley has introduced a new set of AI usage guidelines to support authors in responsibly integrating artificial intelligence tools into manuscript development. Launched at the London Book Fair, the guidelines aim to balance the benefits of AI with the importance of maintaining author authenticity, accuracy, privacy, and ethics.

At the recent London Book Fair, Wiley—one of the world’s leading academic publishers—introduced a new set of guidelines aimed at helping authors navigate the ethical, practical, and technical considerations of using artificial intelligence (AI) during the writing process. These new recommendations provide direction on how to incorporate AI tools while maintaining an author’s original voice, ensuring content accuracy, protecting intellectual property, and adhering to integrity and ethical standards.

The initiative comes in response to significant demand from the research community. According to Wiley’s latest ExplanAItions survey, nearly 70% of researchers expressed a need for clearer guidance on AI use. Wiley developed the guidelines based on in-depth interviews with a range of contributors, including authors, editors, and AI specialists.

“As AI tools become commonplace, it’s important that we equip authors with clear standards,” said Jay Flynn, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Research & Learning at Wiley. “Rather than resist this shift, we aim to empower writers to use AI responsibly and maintain the highest quality in their work.”

The published guidelines, accompanied by a detailed FAQ section, offer advice in several key areas:

  • How to get started with AI tools, including crafting effective prompts

  • How to evaluate different AI tools for accuracy, privacy, and intellectual property compliance

  • How to properly document and disclose AI usage in published materials

Wiley also announced that a follow-up FAQ tailored specifically for the research community will be released soon.

Demonstrating its leadership in AI integration, Wiley recently partnered with the European Space Agency to contribute curated earth science data to enhance the capabilities of the ESA’s Earth Virtual Expert (EVE).

The publisher has also articulated key principles guiding its use of AI, emphasizing human oversight, fairness, transparency, and sound governance. Wiley continues to explore AI’s potential while carefully managing associated risks.

Authors can access the full guidelines now on Wiley’s official website.
